Social Media/Video Production Manager
Simon & Schuster’s flagship imprint is seeking a Social Media Manager and Special Projects Video Producer to help us reimagine and expand the idea of a book publisher.
Do you find most book publishing social media to be underwhelming? Are you bored by the same old photos of books with coffee (and books with pastries…and books with plants)? Does the phrase “quote card” make you roll your eyes and wonder if there has ever been a single person compelled to seek out a book because of one? Have you ever asked yourself why book publishing social media doesn’t take more inspiration from film social media or music social media or fashion social media? Same. We are looking for someone who is ready to shake up book publishing social media; who can produce social media to help our books attain the same cultural awareness as those other artistic mediums; who can produce social media that grabs the attention of not only dedicated readers but people who don’t normally read books; and who can produce social media that is as fresh and vibrant and entertaining as the books we publish.
A passion for and knowledge of books is required, but previous book publishing experience is definitely not. And while not mandatory, familiarity with video shooting and editing is a huge plus, as we are looking to increase our video output—both shortform and longform. This role reports directly to the publisher.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Create and manage daily posting of content on all social media channels
- Work with various departments (editorial, marketing, publicity, backlist) to prioritize content creation and posting schedule
- Recognize timely news events related to our books that warrant an immediate social post
- Oversee the imprint’s Substack
- Ability to shoot/edit video (smartphone or DSLR)
- Develop an exhaustive and encyclopedic knowledge of Simon & Schuster’s varied publishing program
- Help define Simon & Schuster’s online voice and brand identity
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
- 2-4 years relevant experience
- Highly creative with an ability to conceive new and innovative approaches to social media
- Digitally savvy, with knowledge of current social media trends
- Interest in building and nurturing a database of influencers through outreach and active engagement
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an understanding of social first copywriting
- Organized, able to manage time well and juggle multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines
- Equally comfortable working independently or as part of a team
- Experience in Sprout, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or video editing all a plus
- Willingness to work in person (Rockefeller Center, Manhattan) at least four days per week
- Willingness to occasionally work evenings and weekends covering book-related events
- Willingness to occasionally travel throughout the United States covering book-related events
