Laboratory Technician - Sample Processing Services
Summary:
The laboratory technician is responsible for sample processing and aliquoting in the Sample Processing Services Department. S/he will process samples, including nucleic acid extractions, PBMC/BMMC isolations, plasma separation, specimen aliquoting, and other methods as required. They are to ensure sample integrity to meet client expectations.
Responsibilities:
- Performs extraction and purification of nucleic acids as defined by relevant SOP’s.
- Performs methodologies as specified in technical protocols to isolate and stabilize blood cells (e.g. Peripheral Blood and Bone Marrow Mononuclear Cells) according to client specifications.
- Performs aliquoting procedures on specified samples to produce sample aliquots that are volumetric or normalized as defined by client.
- Performs blood/body fluid fractionation into components as requested by client.
- Helps document all required maintenance activities on instruments related to Sample Processing.
- Helps maintain adequate supply of reagents, supplies and sample processing kits.
- Performs Quality analytics on extracted nucleic acids using applied methodologies and platforms (e.g. UV spectrophotometry) to determine sample yield, concentration, and purity.
- Utilizes appropriate procedures to register and place prepared samples into specimen management database and storage location.
- Communicates in a timely manner with cross functional teams and operations staff to ensure client expectations are met.
- Performs other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- At least one of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a life science
- Associate’s degree in a science or health-related field
- Certificate in a science or health-related field and 6 months of laboratory experience
- >1 year laboratory experience including sample processing and blood handling
Required Skills
- Working knowledge of requirements for sample processing in a clinical laboratory
- Knowledgeable with universal precaution and human specimens
- Strong attention to details, strong planning and problem-solving skills.

Certificates and Licenses
None required. MLS(ASCP) or MLT(ASCP) preferred.
Language Ability
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and
clients.
Math Ability
Ability to perform calculations and apply mathematical concepts to metrics’ analyses.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule
form.
Computer Skills
Basic understanding of computers is required.

None.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
